Melinda Avey announced today that she has raised $6,075 in her campaign to represent students, parents, and teachers on the San Juan Unified School District Board of Education.
“People are scared for our students’ future and are enthusiastically supporting candidates who are willing to better understand their social, emotional, and educational needs,” said Avey. “There are no easy answers, but the community wants a clear path forward that puts students first, lets teachers teach, and allows parents to parent.”
Since launching her campaign in early March, Avey has engaged more than 1,000 district families through telephone calls, video meetings, and safely walking door-to-door seeking people’s feedback. “When it comes to the future of local schools, nothing compares to real conversations with local families.”
Avey has been a resident of San Juan Unified School District for more than 40 years and has raised four children who attended district schools. Today she has twelve grandchildren, six of whom are students or graduates of district schools.
Watching her grandchildren matriculate through local elementary, middle, and high schools in recent years she has grown increasingly weary of the school districts direction.
"More than half our students in grades 3-11 are reading below grade level. While college prep programs have proliferated, appropriately, our career education programs have not kept pace. We can and must do better.”
Avey is a first-time candidate for school board. Her general consultant is Duane Dicharia of Axiom Strategies and her Treasurer is Bill Baber.
